Funding of the program “ART FOR THE CITY”

Realization of permanent artworks in the public space

In 2017, the allocated funds were based on the Reserve for the realization of artworks in the public space, created in the chapter 06 of the Prague city budget. The amount was Czk 135 126. The Reserve is managed by the Department of Culture and Tourism at the Prague City Hall (KUC MHMP). In 2019, first steps for the program realization were made, in the 2-year trial period, and the binding Methodology for the support of contemporary art and process of acquisition of artworks in the public space was written.

All artworks within the program “ART FOR THE CITY” must remain the property of the city of Prague. The funds for the realization of a permanent artwork in the public space must therefore be only acquired by a city investor, city institution or city authority.

UM 2020

Further concept-based steps for the contemporary visual art in Prague include the support of temporary art interventions and projects, organized by the Prague City Gallery as the curator of art in the public space. This support was approved by the Prague City Council in January 2020. For this year, the Prague City Gallery prepares numerous events, exhibitions, challenges for artists, temporary installations and performances. Of course, we will also cooperate with other Prague organizations and cultural centers, such as the Prague Transit Authority, Prague Market Hall, Pražské náplavky (Riversides) and city districts. List of public sculptures

The program “ART FOR THE CITY” is also used as a source of funding for the list of public sculptures in the territory of Prague. The making of this list started back in 2017, as one of the outputs of the R1 program – part of the Prague Strategic Plan.
